Making Data Cool at Queen Mary’s Science Fun Day
On Wednesday 20 August 2025, the Barts Health Data Platform (BHDP) team joined in the Science Fun Day, organised by Queen Mary University of London (QMUL).
The event was about making science, research, and careers in these areas' fun and exciting for people of all ages. To help families learn more about our work, we hosted our interactive game, PegAnon which demonstrated how data anonymisation works. Children especially loved the challenge, with many coming back to play repeatedly in hopes of winning. It was a fun and accessible way to introduce an important concept, showing how personal information can be used responsibly while keeping people’s identities safe.
Adults were equally engaged. Many told us they were impressed by the BHDP and wanted to know more about how health data can be used to improve care and research. Several also registered their interest in joining our new Public Advisory Group (PAG), which is being set up to ensure we collaborate closely with the public on new ways to connect and engage with our communities.
We are delighted with the response from the day and grateful to everyone who stopped by to play the game, ask questions, and share their thoughts. Community involvement is at the heart of what we do, and we are excited to continue building these connections as the BHDP grows.
Do you live in Waltham Forest, Newham, or Tower Hamlets? We’re currently inviting residents to join our new PAG. If you’re interested in getting involved, email francene.clarke-walden@nhs.net
