Our data

Details of the meta-data that we hold in our records can be explored through the Health Data Research Gateway and the Research Data Extract entry.
You can browse the structured data available on the BHDP using the Cohort Discovery tool.

For each of our supported datasets registered in the Gateway (our Research Data Extract, our OMOP encoded variant of the Research Data Extract and tables from our EHR Oracle Health Millennium) we have provided synthetic data for all tables in the dataset below. Each synthetic data table is at most 10,000 rows and generated using a Gaussian Copula synthesizer for high statistic similarity between the source and synthetic data.

The synthetic data is available for download: Research Data Extract, OMOP & Millennium.

We adhere to the National Data Opt-Out policy, ensuring that patient data is not used or shared for purposes beyond individual care when an opt-out is in place, where applicable. This is applied to all relevant data sets that we issue in line with NHS Digital guidance.

The Barts Health Data Platform (BHDP) contains electronic health records of an economically (as measured by the Indices of Multiple Deprivation IMD) and ethnically diverse population of over three million individuals with over a million new patient encounters added every year.

This time-lapse video shows patient visits across all sites within Barts Health NHS Trust during November 2024. Each moving point on the screen represents a real patient interaction at one of our hospitals or services. As the days pass in seconds, the screen fills with activity, illustrating how busy our services are and how many people rely on us every day. Every entry point — whether through an emergency department, outpatient appointment, or other service — becomes a data point. Together, these data points help us understand demand, plan services, and improve care for patients across East London.

BHDP Population Distribution by Ethnicity:

This graph shows the number of patients at Barts Health NHS Trust by grouped ethnicity categories. It provides a breakdown of the largest recorded ethnic groups within the patient population, including White, Asian, Black and Mixed backgrounds, based on patient records. For keyboard and screen reader users, the most accessible version of this table is available to download here.
