Charges
In line with NHS England guidance, we make charges to users based on our costs of providing access to the patient data within the Barts Health Data Platform (BHDP) and on the value of the data to your project. The access cost charges are described below, while the data value charges are established through negotiation with our Commercial Team, during the Data Access committee (DAC) approval process.
Access Charges
The charges to access the BHDP are described below. Minimally, a request to access patient data for research purposes for one user in the BHDP would be £3500 + Azure charges in the first year. This is broken down as:
£2000: Full data request from one organisation
£1000: Project workspace in the SDE (per annum)
£500: Single user for the workspace in the SDE (per annum)
Azure usage charges
Additional consultancy charges may be made for custom data, environments and data science support which would be flagged up during the DAC process.

| Project Workspace | £1000 | Recurring annual charge for a project workspace to be set up and managed for any part of the year. Project workspace will usually be provisioned within 1 week after any contract has been signed. |
| New Workspace user | £500 | Recurring annual charge for a user to access a project workspace for any part of the year to access patient data. New workspace users will generally be provisioned within 1 week once they have completed verification and any contract has been signed. |
| Returning Workspace user who is currently certified to use the BHDP | £250 | The same current active user requesting access to further project workspaces in the SDE. |
| Consultancy | £500 | Daily charge to build custom data sets, engaging with the data science team, or provide bespoke analysis environments. A timescale and cost to deliver the required service will normally be agreed within 2 weeks of the initial request. If the project expects to need extensive technical support, we would propose that we are included as a partner in any related funding application. |
| Compute & Storage charges | Variable | These are dependent on the Azure resources provisioned within the project workspace by the project management. An organisational specific billing account can be assigned to the subscription if one is provided (our preferred option). Otherwise, these will be billed to the organisation periodically with a 10% handling charge. |
Azure Charges
It is difficult to predict the exact cost of using the SDE as much of the cost is dependent on the resources (i.e., compute and storage) you use within Azure. Some examples are given below for the compute costs, but if you have further questions please contact us. The monthly virtual machine costs shown below are those that we currently have within our service catalogue. Azure offers a much wider range of machines and costs (see the Azure Pricing Calculator) which we can make available if required for your project. Storage costs around £120/TB/month. Be warned there will be additional costs from Azure (e.g., networking costs, I/O operations, etc.) than these mentioned depending on your exact usage of the project that you should have budget for.
